What is Up-selling?

Up-selling is basically getting the customer to spend more money by purchasing a more expensive model of the same type of product or additional items to benefit, enhance, supplement or otherwise improve upon their current purchase or experience.

For example, you go to Best Buy and purchase a brand spanking new PC, the sales person will ask you if you want to buy an extended warranty. This is a perfect example of an up-sell, they are attempting to get you to spend more money for more value.

Another great example of an Up-sell, and perhaps the most well known, is happening everyday at our local McDonald’s. The simple phrase —“Would you like fries with that?”—is an upsell that has sold millions more fries each year. Cha-Ching!

Up-selling should not be confused or interchanged with Cross-selling.
